Where Pupils Shine

Summer

Personal, Social & Health Education (PSHE)

In Summer 1 our whole school approach is 'Relationships.'  Children will compare different types of friendships and the feelings associated with them.  They will explain how to stay safe when using technology to communicate with their friends, including how to stand up for themselves, negotiate and to resist peer pressure.  During their PSHE lessons children will discuss why some feelings might lead to someone using technology to harm others.

In Summer 2 our whole school approach is 'Changing Me.'  Children will identify some changes that happen to girls' and boys' bodies during puberty and identify some of the emotional changes that happen too.  They will express how they feel about these changes.  Children will understand why looking after themselves physically and emotionally is important.  They will be able to summarise the process of conception.

Reading

English texts taught including grammar focus...

Following our mastery approach to comprehension, children will study a weekly text. Each day the children will focus on a particular element: purpose structure and organisation, vocabulary, retrieval or inference. The texts selected, often provide children with opportunities to embed and deepen their learning from the wider curriculum.

In addition to this, children will vote for their preferred class novel, this will provide children with the opportunity to relax and enjoy being read to.

Our expectation is that children read at home every day. Please ensure reading records are signed and in school daily. For additional support with reading at home, please visit our 'Help at Home' page.

Writing (Spelling, Punctuation & Grammar)

Pieces of writing taught in English lessons along with grammar focus (plan, draft, write, edit)...

Throughout lessons, children are supported and encouraged to reread and improve their own work, accessing texts, dictionaries, thesaurus, handwriting strips and word banks. Our expectation is that children independently proof read for spellings, full stops, capital letters, apostrophes, exclamation marks and question marks...

Handwriting will be taught regularly and children will be supported to develop a neat cursive style.

Daily spelling lessons will incorporate a variety of strategies for learning letter strings, spelling rules and words. Please support your child to learn the spellings we send home each week. For more information about spellings and handwriting, please visit our, 'Helping at Home', page.

Maths

Following our mastery approach, children explore mathematical concepts using concrete materials, moving to visuals and then to abstract calculations. Children will revisit and build on their understanding of...

Please support your child with their weekly times tables homework, developing their instant recall.

For more information about the calculation strategies we use, please visit our 'Help at Home' page.
