It is my great privilege to welcome you to Waterloo Primary School and Nursery.

Waterloo is a diverse and inclusive school serving children and families from Waterloo, Seaforth, Litherland, Bootle and the surrounding communities. Children join us from our two-year-old provision and Nursery and remain with us through to Year 6. Alongside our mainstream classes, we have six specialist provision classes. Although our children may follow different pathways, they are all Waterloo pupils first.

As Headteacher, I am clear about the school our children deserve: a safe, calm and inclusive place where every child is known well, taught well and included well. Children should feel welcomed and secure, while families should know that their child matters and that concerns will be heard.

We have high expectations for every pupil. Secure foundations in communication, reading, writing and mathematics are essential, but our ambition extends beyond academic results. We want children to experience a broad and carefully sequenced curriculum, enriched by visits, residentials, clubs, sport, music, performance and leadership opportunities.

Our pupils bring different experiences, languages, strengths and needs. Some children and families also face barriers which can make education harder to access. Our response is not to lower ambition: it is to understand those barriers and work purposefully to remove them.

This commitment to equity is central to Waterloo. Fairness does not always mean giving every child exactly the same. It means providing the teaching, adaptation, specialist provision or wider support each child needs to participate, belong and succeed.

Our class names are inspired by the night sky, our galaxy and the exploration of space - from Luna, Sol and Comet to Orion, Sirius and Polaris. They reflect the sense of possibility we want every child to carry with them. Every pupil has the potential to shine, to discover new strengths and to achieve more than they may initially believe possible. At Waterloo, we encourage children to look upwards, aim high and understand that no artificial ceiling should be placed upon their ambition.

They describe the qualities we want our pupils to develop: working hard, acting with integrity, welcoming difference, caring for others and taking pride in doing their best.

Alongside these values, our three rules—Be Safe, Be Ready and Be Respectful—create clear and consistent expectations. Warm relationships and high expectations belong together. Children need adults who care for them, provide dependable boundaries and believe that they are capable of success.

Strong relationships with families are equally important. Parents and carers know their children best, and we aim to communicate openly, listen carefully and work alongside them. Regular attendance is an essential part of that partnership, because children can only benefit fully from teaching, friendships and wider opportunities when they are in school.
